May 2020 – Legislative Staff begin discussions with IBEW Organizers on the first legislative staff union

September 2020 – Legislative Staff begin signing cards to petition for an election

November 12th, 2020 – The campaign goes public, with a letter to then House Speaker Tina Kotek and Senate President Peter Courtney

December 16th, 2020 – OPB publishes an article regarding the union organizing

January 13th, 2021 – The petition for election is filed with the Oregon Employment Relations Board

April 6th, 2021 – The Oregon Employment Relations Board issues an order to allow the election of union representative to occur

May 6th, 2021 – Ballots are mailed to eligible voters (bargaining unit members)

May 28th, 2021 – The ballots are counted. 136 ballots were returned, 30 ballots are challenged, 75 ballots are in favor of IBEW Local 89 and 31 ballots are in favor of no representation. Since the challenges will not affect the outcome of the election the challenges are disregarded.

June 8th, 2021 – The Oregon Employment Relations Board issues the certification of election results. Oregon Legislative

December 7th, 2021 – Oregon Legislative Assistants, IBEW Local 89 and the Oregon Legislative Assembly open bargaining on the first agreement for Legislative Staff in the country.
